RN Patient Education Coordinator - Cancer Support Program

Hours: 40 hrs/week, Days, Exempt

The Oncology Patient Education Coordinator oversees and facilitates the practice of patient and caregiver education through resource development, team collaboration, and standardized documentation to enhance the patient/caregiver’s working knowledge and confidence. Assignments are characterized as those requiring collaboration to address patient/caregiver educational needs within the oncology practice area. Serves as subject matter expert in a lead capacity for house-wide initiatives including those in conjunction with hospital accreditation.
Qualifications include a NC RN License with a Master's and 5 years of experience. A BSN with a Master's degree in Nursing, Education, Public Health or related field preferred. Professional certification preferred (OCN or CHES), as well as proficiency in publication and design software.
Description of Job Responsibilities:
1.         Serves as a patient education resource and role model in establishing best practices for the delivery, management, quality and evaluation of oncology patient/caregiver education including a standardized process for documentation of patient/caregiver education within the electronic medical record.
2.         Applies teaching-learning theories to the development, implementation, and evaluation of patient/caregiver education experiences incorporating age-specific competencies, cultural competencies, and health literacy.
3.         Performs focused needs assessment and assets review for all sites and disease team specialties while promoting interprofessional communication, critical thinking, and patient- and family-centered care.
4.         Assesses and evaluates current educational materials and methods used to deliver oncology patient education and develops a standardized process for review/approval/implementation of new patient education materials.
5.         Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members to develop and administer effective patient/caregiver education and training that augments the knowledge, skills and confidence of patients and caregivers and promotes safe care delivery in their home setting.
6.         Evaluates third party educational materials for quality, content, and time- and cost-effectiveness.
7.         Explores innovative methods for providing education to oncology patients/caregivers in a variety of settings
8.         Leads the Oncology Patient Education Committee to provide the forum to create, modify, and implement patient/caregiver education resources.
9.         Collaborates with the Patient/Family Advisory Council (PFAC) for patient/caregiver education resource review and input.
10.       Evidence-Based Practice- Develops evidence-based standards of care and facilitates implementation of same focusing on outcome measurements.
11.       Educational Consultation- Provides consultation to UNC Health Care system and UNC Hospitals, and nursing leadership for program development. Partners with committees, councils and other departments in the identification and development of oncology patient/caregiver education resources.
12.       Research, Policies and Procedures- Evaluates current research to maintain knowledge of practice trends and explores opportunities for research as it relates to patient/caregiver education. Guides the development and revision of standards, policies and procedures for the Department of Nursing. Facilitates the dissemination of practice changes through Nursing Standards Committee and the Shared Governance Councils. Develops and maintains relationships with faculty and students from nursing and other clinical disciplines.
13.       Professional growth and development- Demonstrates responsibility for own professional growth and development. 


Master's degree in an appropriate discipline with at least 5 years of nursing experience. Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina.
